If you’re like most home sellers, you want to get the best deal possible on your real estate commission. But how do you go about negotiating with agents? And what’s fair to expect? In this post, we’ll give you tips on how to negotiate commission and make sure you get the best deal for yourself. Keep reading for insights from industry experts!
Are Real Estate Commissions Negotiable?
Selling your home can be a big decision, and there are a lot of factors to consider. One of the most important questions is: how much will it cost? Real estate commissions are usually a percentage of the final sale price, and they are typically paid by the seller. While it is standard for agents to charge a commission, it is possible to negotiate the rate. If you’re selling your home, it’s important to do your research and ask around before deciding on an agent. Once you’ve found someone you’re comfortable with, sit down and have a conversation about their commission rate. Remember, it never hurts to ask!
There is no set real estate commission, contrary to prior belief. Each agent has the ability to set their own commission earned, so they have the freedom to lower their commission if they think it’s worth it. It is actually illegal for anybody to say they have a set rate, even a brokerage. So yes, real estate commissions are 100% negotiable.
Why you should negotiate real estate commissions?
With home prices going up so quickly, it’s always a good idea to negotiate on the commission with the listing agent. Why should you be giving up so much of your hard-earned equity? Don’t get me wrong, real estate agents bring an incredible amount of value to selling and buying a home, but making $50,000 on one transaction is a little over the top.
How Agents Split Real Estate Commissions?
In most cases, if your listing agent is charging you 6% to sell your home, the listing agent will split it with the agent that brings the buyer. So the listing agent will keep 3%, and the buyer’s agent
agent will get 3%.
But there is no hard and fast rule about this. I know some listing agents that keep a higher percentage than 50%. There is nothing wrong with that as long as they are transparent about it. And
sometimes if the listing agent also represents the buyer, the listing agent will agree to discount his/her commission. It’s all negotiable – remember that!
What Percentage Do Most Realtors Charge?
Remember, there is not standard or set commission. I need to say that upfront, because it’s illegal to set commissions.
But traditionally, real estate agents charge 5%-6% of the sale price. And they split that with the buyer’s agent. But as this post is stating, this is negotiable. If you don’t want to pay that much, you don’t have to (and in my opinion, you shouldn’t).
So, How Do You Negotiate Real Estate Commissions?
It’s quite simple, you just ask. Tell them what you want to pay, and if they don’t want to lower their commission, you have two choices. You can accept what they offer, or find another agent!
